This series as a whole is baffling to me. It tries to paint Art as powerful. It does this by constantly comparing him to his allies. Every step of the way he is on top. Yet when you look to where the comparison is most needed, his enemies, they are ALWAYS on top of him. I am tired of this story because whenever there is a real conflict involving the "bad guys" you can be certain that they will come out ahead. There is nothing to look forward to. The good guys are outnumbered, outgunned, and out maneuvered. No matter how much stronger Art gets there is another bad guy just waiting.Of course this becomes even more frustrating because for some reason every antagonist waits until Art is just powerful enough to fight Art so that he will not lose immediately, but lose he will and it will cost him dearly. Someone has cursed Art with "may you live in interesting times", but I would likely swap out the word interesting with depressing.The worse part about this is that when there is no light there is no hope. The "good guys" literally can't win, there is no capacity for victory in any form. However, this is a story about a character name Arthur. He WILL win in the end. In order for that to happen rather than overcoming adversity through growth it will instead be handed to him as a plot device.When Arthur wins he might not know it, but all of us readers will. He will have won because the Author willed it, not because he deserved it. As much as I understand that there needs to be adversity to overcome, this was just too much. No hope, no bright moments. Just one awful thing after another til there was no enjoyment of this book at all.
